ADHD & Burnout: Tips for Building Healthy Work Health Habits

Day 4 of “10 days, 10 ways you can Shimmer”. Brought to you by Shimmer, Zen, and Cultiveit.

WORK? LIFE? Where is the balance?

Don’t worry - we got you.

Today kicks off the fourth day of our “10 days, 10 ways you can Shimmer” campaign. We’re coming in hot with expert-backed, tried and tested methods to help YOU find YOUR balance.

Time to optimize for healthy habits and happiness.

Did you know people with ADHD are more susceptible to burnout? We have to work harder doing tasks that neurotypical people do with little effort.

Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms?

  • Lack of motivation (more than usual, lasting a long time, and/or typical strategies aren’t working)
  • Exhaustion (lasting several days, with no other medical cause)
  • Irritability or Sensitivity (more than usual)
  • Strong feelings of guilt, depression, anxiety
  • No longer enjoying things you usually enjoy

If you are, then you may be experiencing burnout. Burnout is your body’s way of telling you you need to rest.

3 ways you can take care of yourself:

  • People with ADHD often struggle to say no, and end up over-committing. Make a practice of pausing to say, “let me think about it” when people ask for things. If you can, give it 24 hours before making a decision
  • Ask for help. Are there things that can be delegated to another family member, co-worker, etc? Are there accommodations you can ask for that will make tasks easier?
  • REST. A very wise person once said, “if you don’t take a break when your body asks for it, your body will FORCE you to take a break.” It’s probably the most difficult thing in the world to take a break when you’re already feeling behind. But if you don’t do it now, you may end up sick, injured, or just too burnt out to function at all. A vacation (or stay-cation) is best, but if that’s not possible, maybe shorten your hours, ask for a reduced workload for a few weeks, or take extra breaks during the day. You’re worth it.
