How to Set Yourself Up for Financial Success

Day 3 of “10 days, 10 ways you can Shimmer”. Brought to you by Shimmer, Sequin, and ADHD Money.

Day 3 of “10 days, 10 ways you can Shimmer” is here! Can you believe it?

Today we are investing in YOU. Bringing you tips from experts that YOU WISHED YOU LEARNED in school. Take the step and set yourself up for financial success!

Research shows adults with ADHD are more likely to struggle with money management. Impulse spending, forgetfulness, procrastination, disorganization…these challenges and more leave many ADHDers drowning in debt and collection notices.

Here are three ways to get back on top of your finances - and stay there:

  1. The “Jam Jar” Method: Keep expenses, and the money to pay them, separate from spending money. You can do this using actual jars (or envelopes) and cash, or if that’s too pre-Y2K for you, apps like mvelopes.com make it digital.
  2. Create Barriers: Much of ADHD coaching is about eliminating barriers. In this case, though, we want to put up barriers to make it more difficult to spend impulsively. Delete saved credit cards from browser extensions, google play, etc. Keep your wallet in a place that’s inconvenient to access. Don’t bring your wallet into the store at first - the walk back to the car is a great time to really evaluate how much you need that 10th pair of boots (okay, I may be talking to myself here).
  3. Outsource: It’s okay to need help. Find an ADHD-knowledgeable accountant, professional organizer, coach…whatever and whoever you need to help set up a sustainable system.
