You already know the advice. Try harder. Make a plan. Just start. You've heard it your whole life, and it has never once told you how.

This guide is the how. Chris Wang wrote it from what Shimmer's coaches see working across 100,000 sessions with ADHDers just like you. It won't fix your life by Friday. But it will give you actionable advice that is battle tested and proven to help ADHD brains like ours. Take what's useful, leave the rest, and come back whenever you need a refresh.

You don't need more motivation. You need a better place to start.

Sound familiar

  • You have a graveyard of things that are almost done. The email written but never sent. The project sitting at 90 percent.
  • Every new app works for about a week. Then it turns into another icon you feel bad about.
  • You know exactly what you should do. Knowing has never once made it happen.
  • A free afternoon goes by and you honestly cannot say where it went.
  • There's now, and there's not-now. And not-now may as well be never.

The guide starts from one idea: "if the same thing keeps failing, fix the system, not yourself."

It's for you if

  • You've already tried the apps, the planners, and the systems, and you're suspicious of one more person's hacks.
  • You want short chapters that tell you what to try today, with the reasoning in plain language.
  • You keep starting over, and you want strategies built for restarting.
  • Something real is on the line right now, like a job, a deadline, or a relationship.

It's probably not for you if

  • You want a fix by Friday. The guide gives you small moves that add up with reps, and reps take time.
  • You're looking for a textbook. The science is in there, but in plain words and short chapters.
  • You'd rather have a real person walk you through it every week. That's coaching, and Shimmer does that too.

What's inside

Four parts, 25 short chapters, 62 pages. Every chapter ends with a prompt you can act on in a couple of minutes.

The want

Why goals you don't care about never stick. Find the one that pulls you, quiet the inner critic, and let momentum come before motivation.

The way

The skill chapters, tagged TIME, DONE, and PAUSE. Manage your energy instead of your time. Start smaller than feels reasonable. Count reps instead of streaks. Build the brake before you need it.

The world

Set up your space so it does the remembering for you. Borrow accountability from a person. Tell the people who matter what actually helps.

Putting it together

Your first reps, what to do when it falls apart, and how to come back fast.

A project is a pile of tasks wearing a trench coat.

Hi, I'm Chris

I found out I had ADHD at 28, after years of looking like I had it all together. I left my master's program at Berkeley to build Shimmer, the ADHD coaching platform, because the practical kind of help I needed didn't exist yet.

Since then, Shimmer's coaches have sat with thousands of ADHD adults across more than 100,000 sessions. We've watched what sticks and what falls apart by Tuesday. This guide is the short list of what held up. It comes from all of those sessions, and from my own life with ADHD, and I wrote it the way I wish someone had written it for me.

What this guide won't do

It won't fix your life by the end of the week. Small reps change things, and reps take time. What the guide does is shrink each strategy down to a starting line small enough that the reps actually happen.

It also won't hand you one more big system to maintain. Most of us have buried enough of those. Each chapter is one small move you can try the same day you read it.

And if you put it down for a month, nothing breaks. It's built to be picked back up.
